Old School
Before Hip-Hop was an industry it was a block party. The DJ as the architect, the breakbeat loop as the compositional unit, and the MC as the master of ceremonies rather than the primary artistic focus. What emerged from the South Bronx in the mid-1970s was not just a new genre — it was a new relationship between music, technology, and community.

Golden Age
The moment Hip-Hop discovered what it was fully capable of. Defined by the sophistication of its beat construction — layered sample architecture, producer-driven rhythmic organization, and a density of musical reference that rewarded repeated listening the way the best Jazz always had. The Golden Age is a sonic and structural experience, not a decade — era independence applies here, and a contemporary producer building this same kind of layered sample architecture today classifies as Golden Age regardless of recording date.

Hardcore
The groove made confrontational. Hardcore Hip-Hop stripped away the playfulness of Golden Age and replaced it with a darkness and aggression that reflected the specific reality of the environments it came from. This is not background music. It is not asking for your comfort. It is asking for your attention, and it has earned it.

Southern/Trap
The geography of Hip-Hop shifted south and the beat architecture shifted with it. Sub-bass frequencies you feel before you hear them, hi-hats subdivided to a precision that earlier Hip-Hop never attempted, and a sparse atmospheric production that treats silence as a structural element. Atlanta did for Hip-Hop what New Orleans did for Jazz a century earlier. This genre also covers Dancehall in an American listening context — Dancehall's riddim is producer-constructed rather than performed by an ensemble, and the beat is self-sufficient without vocals, the same structural fingerprint that defines Southern/Trap, which is why it lives here rather than in World alongside Reggae.

Alternative
The last resort classification — for beat architecture genuinely unconventional in ways no other Hip-Hop genre can account for. Not a home for Hip-Hop that was marketed as alternative. When it is assigned correctly it means something specific and earned.
